Resumo
O Diretório dos Índios figura entre os mais importantes instrumentos jurídicos do período colonial. Instituído em 1757 e voltado para a regulação da liberdade concedida às populações indígenas dois anos antes, ele introduz uma importante inflexão na política indigenista. Freqüentemente visto como parte das Reformas Pombalinas, pouco se evidencia a importância das injunções coloniais na sua formulação. O objetivo deste artigo é, justamente, chamar a atenção para o caráter colonial dessa lei: foi a resistência colonial aos termos da liberdade proposta pela Metrópole que promoveu a produção de um instrumento jurídico voltado para a regulação da liberdade indígena.

Abstract
The Directory of the Indians is one of the most important legal instruments of the colonial period. Instituted in 1757 the Directory of the Indians introduced the regulation of the granted freedom the aboriginal populations two years before and also introduces an important inflection in the indigenes politics. Frequently seen as part of the Pombal Marquis Reforms, few studies called attentions to the importance of the colonial injunctions in Directory of the Indians formularization. The objective of this article is to emphasize the law colonial character: it was the colonial resistance to the terms of the Indian freedom proposal by Portuguese Metropolis that promoted the production of a legal instrument directed toward the regulation of the aboriginal freedom.
