Palavras-chave: Etnografia; Indianismo; Historiografia do Brasil Império.

Abstract
This article is meant to discuss the creation of the Ethnography’s section in the Institute of History and Geography of Brazil in the late 1840’s. Ethnography was grouped together with Archaeology in this new section whose purpose in the Institute was to assist the project of writing the History of Brazil. We have come to grips with the emergency of the field of ethnographicalstudies, as well as with the transformation of the Indian in a new subject of knowledge by considering other fields of knowledge referred to the Indian before, like Natural History and the cognizance of space. The creation of this field of study is a result not only from the importance of the literary movement of the Indianism in Brazil, but also from a step in the process of “scientifization” on historical studies on the mid-nineteenth century.
Key Words: Ethnography; Indianism; Historiography of Brazil-Empire.
