Abstract
This article discusses two texts written by Father Antonio Vieira, the Sermon of the Good Thief (1655) and the “Papel Forte”, a piece of advice to the king of Portugal on the Dutch occupation of Pernambuco, drafted in 1648, to consider the inclusion of both in the so-called anti-Machiavellianism of the seventeenth century. Although both relate to the problem of “restitution”, they do so from very different understandings of its meaning. I argue that, while the sermon uses the scholastic argument to provide a counter-program to that of Machiavelli, the second is dominated by principles diagnosed by the Florentine in his studies on the taking and maintenance of power.
Key Words: Antonio Vieira, Sermon of the Good Thief, Papel Forte, Machiavelli, anti-Machiavellianism.
