Abstract
This article aims at analyzing the process of political opening in Brazil from 1979 to 1984 by drawing on the role played by institutions of Brazilian civil society. To this end, the path chosen was to work on the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), which played a key role in this process due to the particular way it faced the “years of lead”, as well as because of the manner in which it has led itself through the narrow alleys of the détente and the troubled roads of political opening. Urged to accomplish the dual task of performing as both a specific corporation of attorneys and a representative institution for the society as a whole, the Association has become a key player in the transition from the authoritarian regime to democracy.
Key Words: Political opening – Civil society – Democratic rule of law.
