Abstract
I intend to develop some reflections around the historian’s métier in his relationship with the document, the archive and patrimony. The archive, in a broad sense, taken as a condition of written history, through the maintenance and custody of traces, trails and indications that, in a fragmentary and incomplete way, move into our contemporaneity and enable us to (re)construct, (re)invent, (re)interpret, represent and think the history. I argue it was under strong feeling and sense of loss that the mechanisms of defense and preservation of the results of human achievements and manifestations over the time were imposed, as well as the writings of national history and national literary history.
Key Words: document; archive; preservation; loss.
