Resumo
Quando Portugal se libertou do jugo espanhol em 1640, não tinha meios para lutar contra a Espanha e os Paises Baixos. O padre Vieira recomendou a D. João IV negociar a compra do Nordeste ocupado pelos holandeses, ou vendêlo. Não conseguindo, ele negociou com o cardeal Mazarin o casamento de D.Teodósio, herdeiro do trono, com a Grande Demoiselle, filha do duque de Orleans, que reinaria em Portugal até a maioridade do rapaz.

Abstract
In 1640, when Portugal became free from Spanish domination, the country did not have the means to fight against Spain and the Low Countries. Father Vieira recommended that D. Joao IV should negotiate either the purchase of Northeastern Brazil, which was occupied by Holland, or its sale. As he was unsuccessful, Father Vieira then negotiated with Cardinal Mazarin the marriage of D. Teodosio, heir to the Portuguese throne, with the Grande Demoiselle, daughter of the Duke of Orleans, who would reign over Portugal until the young man became of age.
