Abstract
This text deals, essentially, with the evangelical and catechetical missions started by priest Antonio Vieira in Sierra Ibiapaba (Ceará), from 1655. The mission lasted until 1759, when it was dissolved by Marquis of Pombal’s order. It also highlights the historical reasons and the fervor of the famous Jesuit who faces adverse situations in the defense of Tabajaras indians, but at the same time as the author emphasizes, ignoring the rigor and inhumanity used by the same masters who enslaved black people. The Jesuit Mission in Sierra Ibiapaba besides the beauty of the text written by Vieira, which recounts his experience, also reflects the less known side of this significant moment in our history: the set of people, villages and nowadays towns which largely served to consolidate the settlement process of that moutainous region of Ceará.
Key Words: Jesuits. Mission. Indians. Enslavement. Settlement.
