Abstract
The Cisplatina War (1825-1828) was more than the beginning of a unique Brazilian military history. It was a crucial event in the country’s history, when the recently created State acted in consonant manner in face of the threat to its territorial integrity within a difficult political context. Its sole terrestrial military campaign, an episode of the conflict for hegemony in the Prata river region, took place in Brazilian territory, while naval battles were waged in the vast waters of the South Atlantic. The Peace Convention of 1828 – “the first big triumph of the imperial diplomacy” – did not result in stability, as Uruguay continued to be the focus of regional crises, up to the 1864 casus belli. Materially and factually modest, the political and strategic sophistication of the 1825 war made it decisive, whereas its conspicuous interpretation as a conflict originated in the Portuguese imperialist heritage hides the motivations and objectives of the actors. If the study of the so-called Cisplatina War is developed in its political, historical and geopolitical dimensions, it will allow for the identification of those long-term factors that influenced international relations as well as the constitution of sovereign political institutions in the region. With regard to Brazil, a new reading is required of the extensive State documentation concerning the war and its antecedents, as well as of the records of Brazilian political, social and cultural life at the time, to help understand the contemporary interpretation of those facts which allowed for a significant expression of Brazilian historiography on the conflict. This paper proposes a historical look on the continuities and ruptures in this event, whether or not these happened.
Key Words: Cisplatina, Prata, Army Brazilian borders.
