Abstract
This article has two goals: the first one is to present an outline of an ideal type of the cultured man (Der gebildete Mensch) in the Nineteenth Century, more precisely in the German cultural context. In that sense, I define the cultured man as one who is able to think universally, to act autonomously and is capable of building an image of continuity. The second goal of this article is to reflect on that model at present, taking into consideration that, in spite of the fact that all of the above-mentioned characteristics have already suffered harsh, and even fair, criticisms, the challenges that led to their creation, still persist.
Key Words: Cultured man; universality; Autonomy; Continuity.
