Abstract
The purpose of this article is to discuss new hy- potheses on the trajectory of Emperor D. Pedro II, based on his relations with the scientific area. The sources for this work were documents from the Archives of the Brazilian Imperial House – the Emperor’s private documents – under the custody of the Imperial Museum. We focused on the 44 diaries and his correspondence with intellectuals such as Francisco Adolpho de Varnhagen, Antonio Gonçalves Dias, Alexandre Herculano and Jean Louis Armand de Quatrefages de Bréau. These documents are privileged sources for the reflection on larger issues inherent to the period of the Brazilian monarchy; among others, the building of a national identity. They are also sources for the search in the reports left by the Emperor of revealing aspects relating to a vital theoretical problem: the dialectics between social agent and social structure. The struggle for the supremacy of debates on the scientific area, including a new science – anthropology – appears to be an interesting lead to help rethink D. Pedro II’s trajectory during his transition from the aristocratic ethos to the bourgeois ethos. The research allows us to reaffirm that D.Pedro II actually participated in the debates, not just as a dilettante, a sponsor or a cultured king, but rather in a decisive manner that would bring his way of thinking, especially as from the 1870’s, closer to the catalogue of ideas from the generation of the 1870 intellectuals; this appears to be a new perspective to help understand the Emperor’s paradoxical and complex trajectory.
