Resumo
O artigo discute a projeção e a presença da Espanha no Brasil, a propósito do IV Centenário da morte do descobridor Vicente Yañez Pinzón. Com base em uma carta de Juan de la Cosa, o autor evidencia que os espanhóis desceram o rio Amazonas, deixando descrições geográficas e mapas, que constituem algumas raízes do que é atualmente o Brasil.

Abstract
This article discusses the projection and the presence of Spain in Brazil for the celebration of the Fifth Centennial of the death of its discoverer, Vicente Yañez Pinzón. Based on the letter by Juan de la Cosa, the author evidences that the Spanish sailed down the Amazon river, leaving geographical descriptions as well maps that would become the roots of what Brazil is nowadays.
