Abstract
The existence of a British community in Niterói resembles a Gauss curve. It started in 1808, when the Portuguese Court arrived in Brazil escaping from Napoleon’s troops and lasted until a few years after the mid-XXth Century. During its existence, British citizens organized their life: they founded clubs, erected an Anglican Church, a school, a rest home for their aged, etc. They formed a closed, highly respected society and enjoyed a pleasant life. A few decades after World War II, it began to dwindle down until its total disappearance at the end of the XXth Century.
Key Words: British citizens; their life; Niterói.
