Abstract
Although few doubts remain about the role that religion continued to play in the Portuguese world of 1815, if there is no dearth of important studies on the idea of empire, too little attention was spared for the word itself, which seemed to be found on the tongues of everyone in that con- text, where it could bear more than one mean- ing. An example of this can be seen in the pref- ace that bishop Azeredo Coutinho penned for a new edition of his Essay a few years earlier and in other texts. Since a complete and satisfac- tory treatment of the matter is not feasible here, this article merely seeks to highlight how much memories of the past haunted the term as well as to suggest what was at play when it ended up being chosen to designate a new political entity, as occurred in 1822.
Key Words: Empire; Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation; Portuguese Empire; United Kingdom.
