Abstract
The goal of this article is to analyze the views of Portugal and Brazil on one event – the el- evation of Brazil to the United Kingdom of Por- tugal and the Algarves in 1815. By way of the differing perceptions held by men of the same time period, we can see the diverse language used to try to express both the different politi- cal and social identities and the tensions that were present at that historical juncture between the two fraternal kingdoms. Whereas for those who found themselves in Brazil the elevation of Brazil to a kingdom represented the possibility of certain autonomy and prominence within the inside of the Empire, those who remained in the Portuguese kingdom held an inferior status since Portugal itself became a colony of its own former colony. However, if the United Kingdom in 1815 did not represent a guarantee of unity in the Portuguese empire, neither did it signify the idea of a separation between its parts. Only in the second half of 1820 did the fragile equilib- rium finally rupture.
