Abstract
The French presence in Guanabara at the time of Villegagnon ́s adventure and the Antarctic France was already established and well known both in Portugal and in much of Atlantic and Mediterranean Europe. It was, therefore, no novelty that could have haunted the court of King John III. Why did Lisbon delay acting against the French maneuver of appropriating its colonial territory and why for so long? What geopolitical implications were behind it and why weren ́t they perceived by Admiral Coligny, the mentor of the French plan for La Ravardière? The text seeks to examine the context of the events that led to the founding of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Key Words: French in Rio de Janeiro; geopolitical implications; King John III.
