The conflict over whether modern values should be adopted or not, and the attempts to reconcile old and new values are analyzed from a historical and legal perspective. The importance of the family as the basis of society is reflected in the emphasis given to its regulation, particularly in relation to the role of women and filiation, reaffirming, thus, its patriarchal nature and showcasing the resistance to modernity and the validity of traditional values for several decades in the development of civil codes.
