Abstract
We present in this article an analysis of the editorial trajectory traced by Francisco de Paula Brito in the Imperial Court during the Second Reign, emphasizing thereby the typographic works of this pioneering Brazilian publisher in the area of medical sciences. Such a contribution on his part is barely dealt with by researchers, who traditionally focus on his work as a publisher of literature books. We thus start from the assumption that his networks of sociability among a group of socially, economically and politically influential intellectuals in the city of Rio de Janeiro were central to building and keeping his business going. Within the scope of his work, the relations he established with the doctors of the imperial court played a major role. Such relations enabled him to increase his business and highlighted the importance of the medical book trade as well as the profitability generated by the demand for printed matter by this professional category which had acted as a true driving force behind the print trade in the capital.
Key Words: Francisco de Paula Brito; history of books and printing press; history of Brazil.
