Resumo
Em luta com a Espanha para assegurar a Restauração da Independência de Portugal, sem recursos para financiar a guerra, D. João IV, às vésperas da reunião das Cortes de Lisboa de 1642, resolve aumentar os impostos para cobrir os gastos com a renovação e o fortalecimento de suas forças armadas. O Padre Antonio Vieira, principal conselheiro do rei, e já famoso em Portugal como orador sacro, é escalado para propor, na abertura da reunião das Cortes de 1642, a urgente reforma tributária. Este texto discute a difícil situação política e militar de Portugal nos anos iniciais do reinado de D. João IV e, em especial, o Sermão de Santo Antônio, pregado na Igreja das Chagas de Lisboa, em 1642, no qual Antonio Vieira tratou do tema.

Abstract
Fighting with Spain to ensure the Restoration of the Independence of Portugal and without funds to finance the war, D. João IV, on the eve of the Lisbon Courts of 1642, decided to raise the taxes to cover the expenses with the renewal and strengthening of his armed forces. Father Antonio Vieira, the king’s chief adviser and already famous in Portugal as a sacred orator, was designated to propose, at the opening of the referred meeting of the Courts, the urgent tax reform. This text discusses the difficult political and military situation of Portugal in the early years of the reign of king D. João IV, especially the Sermon of St. Anthony, preached in the Church of the Wounds of Lisbon, in 1642, in which Antonio Vieira addressed the theme.
