Abstract
We analyze the horizon of expectations opened in Brazil between its elevation to the status of United Kingdom in 1815, and the events that led to its rupture with Portugal. We also highlight the existence of a centralizing political power in the Johannine government, especially in the administration of the captaincies and in the judicial and military spheres; the economic growth of the country and, ideologically, the outline of a Brazilian nation. We further discuss the possible paths open for Brazil at the time, and finally review the period between 1820 and1822, in which the formula for the United Kingdom gradually turned out to be a “lost challenge”.
