Abstract
We analyze in this article the role of the military orders bestowed during the stay of the Portuguese royal family in America. The decorations would produce a social hierarchy, since those who received them were incorporated into the nobility. And since the orders were only bestowed upon provision of various services, the Portuguese Crown used them as a way of holding together their own state. We first identified the names of the merchants that belonged to the commercial elite that inhabited the Court and who held a large amount of capital among those awarded with a decoration. We then reviewed the ways in which they served the State. The findings show that they allocated part of their capital to the court with the aim of achieving a prestigious social position in society and becoming a member of the nobility.
Key Words: D. João IV; Johannine court; military orders; decorations; merchants.
