Abstract
In the second half of the eighteenth century, the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão became the scene of disputes with the Kingdom of Spain over border demarcation, as well as over the Pombaline indigenous policies aimed not only at the integration, possession, exploitation, valorization and control of indigenous peoples but also at enabling indigenous elites to occupy posts in the military officialdom. This paper presents an analysis of the instrumentalization of the indigenous policies and laws carried out by these elites, based on the requests of the Indians, on official correspondences exchanged between colonial and metropolitan authorities (letters, minutes, provisions, instructions, opinions and consultations of the Overseas Council), as well as on the laws and charters of that period. The 1757 “Directory of Indians” plays a central role in the analysis. Our research shows how these indigenous elites were able to manipulate the Pombaline indigenous legislation to their advantage in order to acquire, consolidate or increase privileges, and to cope with the violations and disrespect perpetrated by other residents or by the colonial authorities, within the limits social reality would permit them.
