The conflict against Paraguay was a clash of great magnitude, deserving to be represented through paintings as the pictorial Combate Naval do Riachuelo, of Victor Meirelles. This article, seeks to verify if this work can be understood from the concept of places of memory, developed by the French historian Pierre Nora (1993). For such, a bibliographic review and an analysis of the pictorial work Combate Naval do Riachuelo were carried out, and it was found that it can be considered as a place of memory since it was part of that process that sought to construct visions favorable to the conflict.
