Abstract
Abstract: Based on a broad analysis about the presence of secular priests on the management boards of different associations which were founded in Portuguese America and the Kingdom of Portugal by the Third Order of Saint Francis, we aim to understand the conflicts between Canon José Ferreira de Mattos and the Franciscan friars in the province of Bahia, to which the Third Order of that city was subordinated. The conflicts involved construction works in the chapel of the Third Order, particularly the construction of bell towers, thereby rendering it unnecessary to use the convent bell tower or to celebrate liturgical acts in the chapel of the Order and in the convent church. The frictions between the Third Order and the Franciscan religious in Bahia were also triggered by different legal orders that each branch of the Franciscan family considered appropriate for the government of the Third Order. The article systematically deals with the participation of the secular clergy in associations meant, basically, to aggregate lay faithful, a topic that has been little or hardly explored by historiography
Key Words: Third Order of St. Francis; secular clergy; religious orders; Franciscans in Bahia.
