Abstract
The article deals with the opening and closure of representations of imperial Brazil on the African continent in the period between 1840 and 1889. We seek to show how these representations were linked to the general foreign policy adopted at the time as well as to great historical processes taking place in Brazil such as slavery, migration, and the economic changes in the second half of the nineteenth century. Though the topic has received little attention by historians, the opening of diplomatic representations in North, West, Central-Western and Southern Africa brings to light the Brazilian political, economic and social presence on the continent.
.Key Words: Second Reign, Africa, diplomacy, trade, political pragmatism.
