Abstract
The historiography of international exhibitions held in the main European cities and in the Americas since the middle of the 19th century has focused on the different dimensions of this phenomenon, with important contributions being made in the fields of economy history, history of science and cultural history. We present in the paper a research on technological, scientific and urban planning aspects of great exhibitions. Our focus is, first, on the important construction and renovation works in the city of Rio de Janeiro from the end of the 19th century onwards, and on the set of interventions related to the renovation of the port and its surrounding area, which were intended to guarantee a better and more appropriate integration of this center into the routes of international trade and expansion of the financial capital of the period. Next, we examine the connection between this set of reforms with the preparations for the National Commemorative Exhibition of the 1st Centenary of the Opening of the Ports of Brazil in 1908, highlighting the symbolism of this great event for the young Republic. This national exposition achieved two aims: it was a homage with a view of not only regaining the victorious idea of liberal thought in Brazil, linked to the aspects that stood out during the one hundred years that marked the Brazilian integration into world capital markets, but also of expressing the belief in a victory of this same liberalism in the world scenario.
