Resumo
A pintura do teto da nave da igreja do Colégio dos Jesuítas em Santarém é um dos mais suntuosos espécimes da pintura ilusionista do tempo do reinado de D. João V. A nave apresenta pintura do tipo narrativa-historiada envolvendo um complexo programa iconográfico. A exuberância do teto apresenta um quadro recolocado com o tema da Imaculada, mas em pontos estratégicos o artista dispõe de escorços figurativos e arquitetônicos: putti e volutas. Isso permite uma maior dimensão e poder de retórica e persuasão ao fruidor. Uma pintura com todos os requintes formais de uma decoração pictórica ao serviço de um complexo sistema propagandístico vinculado ao universo jesuítico.

Abstract
The painting of the ceiling of the nave of the church of the Jesuit College in Santarém is one of the most gorgeous specimens of illusionistic painting of the time of the reign of King John V. The ship has kind of paint-chronicled story involving a complex iconographic program. The exuberance of the roof presents a framework reattached to the theme of the Immaculate Conception, but at strategic points in the artist has foreshortenings figurative and architectural: putti and scrolls. This allows a greater size and power of rhetoric and persuasion to the spectator. A painting with all the refinement of a formal pictorial decoration in the service of a complex system tied to propaganda universe Jesuit.
