Abstract
This text is based on the history of culture and focuses on a few aspects of the history of magics, musical drama productions successfullyperformed both in Brazil and in Portugal from the end of the eighteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. The magics are inserted in the socalled light theater and are similar in genre to the féerie in France, the fantastical opera in Italy, and the operettas. Though they are almost totally omitted from the theatrical and musical literature, magics played an important role in society in those days. They change and re-elaborate the character of other genres, such as the opera, operettas and vaudeville, as well as several other urban musical genres. This text also focuses on the fairies and the devil, fantastical characters that are recurrent in magics, and points out the role of music as an element of drama.
Key Words: Magics; musical theater; history of culture.
